4th of July.
I'm an immigrant. I came to this country when I was 15 years old with a dream, and looking for opportunities and justice. I love this country and have nothing but respect for it because it was built by immigrants, with the promise of freedom and equality.
For years, the United States it has been a land of progress, modernity, and free thinking. Whats happening today with immigrants it's not new, but it's unbelievable that after all the struggle to reach a level of modernity and civil rights there are still immigration laws that not only do not resolve problems but instead they create another new set of problems. Right now, the US is taking measures that go against the human rights with the excuse of protecting their people.
But are we really being protected? Schools shootings have killed more people than immigrant criminals or terrorists. Politicians don't show the same reaction for gun control policies. Every day, the government show the inability to protect the children, the future of this country and the world.
The only clear message is fear, to the different, to the foreign, to everything that could be someone else problem. Truth is that we are more alike than different, and we must fight inequality, injustice, and offer help to those in need.
Yo soy una inmigrante. Vine a este país a los 15 años con el sueño de encontrar un terreno fértil de oportunidades y de justicia. Este es un país que amo y respeto, más que nada porque esta nación se formó por inmigrantes y con la promesa de una tierra libre y valiente.
Durante mi tiempo aquí, los Estados Unidos se ha mostrado como una tierra de progreso, un país moderno en pensamiento, acción y voluntad. Lo que esá sucediendo hoy dia con respecto a los inmigrantes viene desde años atrás, pero es insólito que en pleno siglo XXI, a pesar de todo el esfuerzo que pusieron nuestros antepasados para llegar a este nivel de modernidad, civilizazión y respeto se siguen manejando reglas de inmigración crueles e injustas que no ayudan a resolver el problema sino en cambio crean otros. En Estados Unidos, se están tomando medidas severas que rompen cualquier decreto de derechos humanos bajo la excusa de proteger un país y su gente.
¿De qué nos estan protegiendo? Los ataques a las escuelas han matado a más estadounidenses inocentes que cualquier inmigrante o acto terrorista. Yo no veo que los políticos apliquen la misma severidad a las políticas de control de armas en este país. Cada día, el gobierno revela la incapacidad para proteger el potencial humano que son los niños, el futuro de esta nación y del mundo.
Lo unico claro en todo esto es que existe miedo. A todo lo que parece distinto, a lo que nos suena ajeno y considerado como problema de otros. La realidad es que somos mas parecidos que distintos, y debemos perder el miedo a enfrentar la inequidad, la injusticia y ofrecer ayuda a quien la necesita.
